I saw a few Police motorcycles on my lunch break today. I see four BMWs and three Harleys. Given the option, I think I would much prefer a BMW as a duty bike, but I don't ride so I don't really know.

The department here has switched to BMW's and the cops I have talked to love them.

the BMW is a more complex machine, but a vastly superior one. The Harley is like a 2014 Corolla, you buy it because you heard you should buy a Harley and couldn't be bothered to shop around.

All the Austin Police and Travis County Sheriff's office deputies are riding BMWs now. I spoke to one of the motor officers, and he said the main reason for switching was ABS on the BMWs. It makes them significantly safer.

I have a 2003 BMW R1150RTP. It was used by the City of Bellevue Washington and had 48k miles on it when I got it. The thing is a beast. 650 lbs. it has special gearing so it accelerates hard. It has two batteries. One runs the bike and the other for the lights. ABS, run flats, fuel injection, heated grips, power windscreen, a 6.5 gallon tank and a 250 mile range. The seating position takes some getting used to, but the bike is fast, smooth and quiet. A good machine.
